Discover one of Australia's youngest Botanic Gardens, located at beautiful Mackay on the Central Queensland Coast.
These new gardens opened to the public in May 2003 and are being constructed over a 15 year, 10 phase period focusing on flora from the Central Queensland Coast bioregion that surrounds the city, along with other beautiful Australian natives and exotics from similar climates around the world.
The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens provides many resources to visitors and the community - from a pleasant recreational facility with over three kilometres of walking and cycling trails, to a unique cafe and gallery perched high above our wildlife filled lagoons, to a place that remembers the past and Mackay's cultural identity today with 5 featured ''cultural themed' gardens and of course - a garden filled with life and colour - home to animals and plants - some threatened in the wild.
One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the world’s most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches.
Because of its natural beauty, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the world’s most sought-after tourist destinations. A visitor to the Great Barrier Reef can enjoy many experiences including snorkelling, scuba diving, aircraft or helicopter tours, bare boats (self-sail), glass-bottomed boat viewing, semi-submersibles and educational trips, cruise ship tours, whale watching and swimming with dolphins.
Located at Mackay's northern beaches, Black's Beach is Mackay's longest continuous beach, approximately six kilometres in length. It is a 15-minute drive from Mackay's city centre. Head north on the Bruce Highway and turn right onto the Mackay Bucasia Road, following the Black's Beach signage. A car park and walkway to the beach can be found on Coral Drive, or beach goers can access it from Bourke Street, with a playground, picnic facilities, barbeques and toilets available.
The beach is dotted with beachfront accommodation options, ranging from caravan and camping to self-contained, motel-style and resort. Guests wake each morning to the relaxing sound of the waves rolling onto the sandy beach.
Popular with walkers, Black's Beach is a pet-friendly beach, however it is not an off-leash area and therefore all pets must be kept on their lead and under control. Enjoy a family picnic on the sand.
Bream and whiting are caught off the beach, and excellent fishing can be found at the southern point near the mouth of McCready's Creek.
This ruggedly scenic park includes rainforest, eucalypt forest, beaches, rocky headlands covered in hoop pines, and volcanic rock formations. Visitors can camp and bushwalk. The Great Barrier Reef Coast Marine Park adjoins the national park.
